ATLANTA, GA. - The University of North Carolina women's swimming and diving team stands in third place after the opening day of the 2008 Atlantic Coast Conference Women's Swimming and Diving Championships at the Georgia Tech Aquatics Center in Atlanta, Ga.
The Tar Heels finished fourth in the 200-yard medley relay and third in the 800-yard freestyle relay. The Tar Heels have 62 team points at the end of the first day of the championships behind Virginia which has 74 points and Florida State with 66.
After the Tar Heels, Virginia Tech is fourth with 58, followed by Miami with 50, Duke with 50, Maryland with 48, NC State with 44, Georgia Tech with 42, Clemson with 28 and Boston College with 26.
Carolina finished fourth in the 200-yard medley relay with a season-best time of 1:41.13. The Tar Heel relay included backstroker Megan Steeves (26.23), breaststroker Alison Clemens (28.36), butterflier Lindsey Marck (24.37) and freshman Rebecca Kane (22.17).

Morrissy's opening split in the 800 free relay was her career best time at 1:48.22, bettering her 1:48.45 from Nike Cup last fall.
Carolina's times were virtually the swam they swam in these events at the 2007 ACC Championships in Chapel Hill. Last year, UNC went 7:14.38 in the 800 free relay while finishing first in the event. Carolina was faster this year in the 200 medley relay at 1:41.13 after going 1:41.15 last year when the Heels finished in the event.
The Championships continue Thursday morning with 11 a.m. preliminaries in the 500-yard freestyle, 200-yard individual medley and 50-yard freestyle, followed by men's three-meter diving preliminaries at 1 p.m. and women's one-meter diving preliminaries at 3:15 p.m.
