
North Carolina Retains Second Place At ACC Championships

ATLANTA, GA. - Led by sophomore Megan Steeves' third-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke, the North Carolina women's swimming and diving team held on to second place Friday night after session No. 5 at the 2008 Atlantic Coast Conference Women's Swimming and Diving Championships at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center.
Steeves placed third in the 100 back with a career best time of 54.69. That time moved her into third place of all-time performers in UNC history in the event behind only Christy Watkins and Summer Mack.
Carolina's other championship finalists Friday night included sophomore Alison Clemens, who finished fourth in the 400-yard individual medley in a time of 4:20.87; senior Lindsey Marck, who finished eighth in the 100-yard butterfly in 55.11; senior Kelsey Morrissy, who finished sixth in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:48.58; and senior Erika Matheis, who finished sixth in three-meter diving with a score of 283.20.
The Tar Heels are in second place with 378 points, behind only Virginia which leads with 546 points. Florida State is third with 359.5 points, Virginia Tech is fourth with 247, Clemson is fifth with 238, Duke is sixth with 191, Georgia Tech is seventh with 181, Maryland is eighth with 156.5, NC State is ninth with 149, Miami is ninth 10th with 148 and Boston College is 11th with 40.
UNC's 400-yard medley relay finished in third place in the only relay event of the evening. The Tar Heels swam a 3.41.50, edging Florida State barely as the Seminoles swam a 3.41.51. Morrissy caught the FSU swimmer on the last leg of the relay in order to pick up the third place finish. The relay consisted of Steeves (55.51), Clemens (1:02.28), Marck (54.35) and Morrissy (49.36).

400 IM -- Taylor McFarlane, 10th, 4:22.84 (personal best); Aubrette Biegel, 13th, 4:27.63; Ashley Miller, 16th, 4:29.83; Lindsay McIlvain, 20th, 4:31.98.
100 Fly -- Kimmy Davis, 24th, 57.26.
200 Free -- Eliza Butts, 12th, 1:49.45; Katura Harvey, 16th, 1:52.69; Whitney Sprague, 17th, 1:49.12.
100 Breast -- Katie Marsh, 17th, 1:05.61.
100 Back -- Ashley Howard, 13th, 56.83; Taylor McFarlane, 14th, 57.00; Kimmy Davis, 20th, 57.73; Barbara Thomas, 21st, 57.77.
3-Meter Diving -- Erica Schiffler, 10th, 258.55; Laura Filip, 12th, 249.65.
Action concludes Saturday with the following events: 1650-yard freestyle, 200-yard backstroke, 100-yard freestyle, 200-yard breaststroke, 200-yard butterfly, 10-meter platform diving, 400-yard freestyle relay.
