STATESBORO, GA. - After cutting eight strokes off their first-round score, the University of North Carolina men's golf team climbed into tenth Saturday after the second round of the Schenkel E-Z-Go Invitational. The team combined for a two-over 290 to put them at 12-over for the tournament. Freshman Kevin O'Connell fired a team-best 68 to move into a tie for 12th, while fellow freshman Henry Zaytoun carded an even-72.
Like the team, O'Connell showed marked improvement Saturday, shaving six strokes off his Friday total. He now sits at two-under for the tournament, only three strokes off the lead pace. Zaytoun is tied for 27th at one-over. Reed Darsie recorded a second-round 75 to move to 63rd, while Barden Berry shot 79 to fall to 83rd. David Holzworth dropped six strokes from his first-round total with a 75.
After posting eight-under as a team, Alabama is now in first at 11-under. Two strokes behind is South Carolina. Florida is in third at seven-under, and first-round leader Tennessee is in fourth at five-under. UAB rounds out the top five at one-under.
South Carolina's George Bryan IV had the best round of the day with a 66 to move into a six-way tie for first at five-under. Both UAB and Florida have two golfers in the mix at the top of leader board, while leader Alabama has one with Matthew Swan.
