Freshman Charles Cox barely missed out on a provisional mark in the 400 throughout the indoor season and a season of hard work came to fruition on Saturday as the freshman clocked a 46.75 at the Virginia Tech Last Chance meet in Blacksburg, Va. Cox's time ranks as the 11th fastest in the country to date. Several other Tar Heels were attempting to improve on their provisional marks in the final tuneup before the NCAA Indoor Championships next week in Fayetteville, Ark.
Cox easily took the men's 400 as he won by nearly two seconds en route to claiming his first provisional mark. The freshman sprinter had clocked times of 46.77 throughout the season, just shy of the provisional mark. In other men's action, Donte Nall cleared 6-9 in the high jump to finish second overall after claiming the ACC Championship a week ago.
On the women's side, Tyra Johnson finished sixth in the 200 meter dash as she clocked a time of 24.43. The duo of LaToya James and Vanneisha Ivy made their usual appearances in the top five of the 60-meter hurdles as James finished third in a time of 8.33 and Ivy took fourth at 8:38, both provisional times. James currently holds the 18th fastest time in the country, while Ivy's best time ranks 26th.
Patience Coleman claimed the top spot in the high jump as she cleared 5-8 1/2 for the victory in the final Tar Heel action of the weekend.
The final participation list for the NCAA Indoor Championships will be announced on Monday.
