
Terps Drop Tar Heels, 6-4 In ACC Tournament Semifinals

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. - Top-seeded Maryland scored the game's first six goals and held on to win despite not scoring in the game's final 39:48, defeating fifth-seeded North Carolina, 6-4, at Scott Stadium on Friday evening. With the win, Maryland improves to 15-1 this season. Carolina falls to 12-6.
After the Tar Heels spotted the Terrapins a 6-0 lead in the first 20 minutes of the game, Carolina fought back and scored four consecutive goals, holding the Terps scoreless for nearly 40 minutes until the game's end but could not get any closer than a two-goal deficit in the second half.
For the Tar Heels, Megan Bosica, Kristen Carr, Erica LaGrow and Corey Donohoe each scored one goal in the loss. Bosica added an assist. For Maryland, Dana Dobbie scored twice while Casey Magor, Amanda Sinnenweber, Lauren Cohen and Caitlyn McFadden each scored once.
Maryland got the scoring started just 2:24 into the game when Magor scored with a quick shot off an assist from McFadden. Thirty-three seconds later, Sinnenweber scored an unassisted goal to make it 2-0 Terrapins. A minute and a half later, Cohen picked up a ground ball off a Tar Heel turnover and scored quickly to make it 3-0 and force a UNC timeout with 25:29 left before halftime.
The Terps upped their lead to 4-0 on an unassisted goal by McFadden from 10 meters out in front of the cage with 20:07 left in the half. It was 5-0 Maryland when Dobbie scored on a quick shot off an assist from Kelly Kasper. Dobbie made it 6-0 with a goal off a pass from Kasper with 9:48 to go before the break as Kasper passed from behind the cage to Dobbie for the score.
The Tar Heels got on the scoreboard with 8:58 to go before the half when Bosica stole the ball from a Terrapin and scored from 12 meters out to cut the lead to 6-1.
Carr cut the lead to 6-2 with an unassisted goal at the 27:18 mark of the second half, taking the ball at the top of the 12-meter arc and fighting her way through several defenders to score while falling to the turf. LaGrow made it 6-3 Terps when she scored unassisted with 24:35 left, scoring from the left of the cage from 10 meters. Donohoe made it 6-4 with 23:22 left, scoring with a quick shot off a pass from Bosica and forcing a Maryland timeout.
Neither team scored in the game's final 23:22 and Maryland did not score in the second half.
The Terrapins advance to Sunday's ACC championship game to face host and No. 2 seed Virginia, which beat Duke 10-9 in Friday's first semifinal. UNC awaits a possible NCAA Tournament bid, to be announced on Monday night May 5.
