Charlottesville, Va. - Corey Donohoe scored five goals and Megan Bosica had two goals and three assists as the unseeded University of North Carolina women's lacrosse team upset fourth-seeded Virginia, 11-7, on a cold and rainy Sunday afternoon at Klockner Stadium in the NCAA Tournament first round. With the win, Carolina improves to 13-6 this season. Virginia fell to 14-4 with the defeat.
The win marked Carolina's third NCAA Tournament road win in its history and first since beating Penn State in the 2005 first round. UNC avenged a 16-5 loss to the Cavaliers in Charlottesville earlier this season. The Tar Heels advance and will play No. 5 seed Syracuse next Saturday at 1 p.m. in the NCAA quarterfinals at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, N.Y.
Carolina dug itself a 3-0 hole less than six minutes into the game before finishing the first half with a 6-0 run to take a 6-3 lead at intermission. The Cavs scored the first two goals of the second half in quick fashion to rally before the Tar Heels scored back-to-back goals to put themselves back up by three goals.
The Cavaliers got the scoring started less than two minutes into the contest, as Jenny Hauser took and pass right into the middle of the UNC defense and scored unassited at the 28:05 mark. Just under three minutes later, Ashley McCulloch scored on a free position attempt to make it 2-0 Virginia with 25:13 left before halftime. Kaitlin Duff quickly made it 3-0 with an unassisted score off the draw control.
Freshwater cut the lead to 3-1 with 23:13 left before the break, scoring an unassisted goal after a UVa turnover in the UNC end of the field. Donohoe made it 3-2 Cavs with 17:23 left in the half, taking a pass from Kristen Taylor from behind the goal and scoring. Russell tied the score at 3-3 on a free position attempt with 15:33 to go in the half. Parks scored an unassisted goal for the Tar Heels, taking the ball behind the cage and wrapping around for a score that made it 4-3 UNC and forced a UVa timeout with 12:21 to go before the break.
Donohoe scored for a second time, this time on a free position attempt, to make it 5-3 UNC with 9:06 to go before halftime. Donohoe's third goal came with 3:20 left in the half as she took a pass from Bosica from behind the net and scored at point-blank range to make it 6-3 Carolina, a lead that would hold until halftime.
In the second half, McCulloch scored unassisted at the 27:41 mark, weaving through the defense to cut the UNC lead to 6-4. Blair Weymouth scored an unassisted goal just over a minute later to make the score 6-5 Tar Heels with 26:32 left to go.
Kristen Taylor scored for Carolina with 23:57 left to stop the brief UVa run and make it 7-5. After a long scoreless stretch, Megan Bosica scored an unassisted goal with 9:13 left to make the UNC lead 8-5.
Hauser took a pass from Brittany Kalkstein and scored for Virginia with 7:26 left to cut the lead to 8-6. Bosica struck back quickly for the Tar Heels, scoring just 16 seconds later off the draw to put UNC back up 9-6. Weymouth responded eight seconds later with an unassisted goal of her own at 7:02 to make the score 9-7. Donohoe's fourth goal of the game, coming off a pass from Bosica with 6:49 left, put the Tar Heels back up 10-7 in a frantic run. That same combination created another UNC score with 6:09 left, making it 11-7 Carolina and force a Virginia timeout. Carolina was able to maintain possession for most of the remainder of the game to ice the victory.
