Carolina Golfers Finish Fourth At Maryland Intercollegiate

The University of North Carolina men's golf team opened its 2008-09 season with a fourth-place finish at the rain-shortened Maryland Intercollegiate. Carolina carded a one-under-par 283 in the second round after posting a 291 earlier in the day for a six-over 574 total. Arkansas ran away from the 18-team field firing a blistering 24-under 544 with two rounds of 12-under 272.
Tar Heel sophomore Kevin O'Connell, from Cary, N.C., and freshman Jack Fields, from Southern Pines, N.C., both fired two-under 140 totals to finish tied for 10th place. O'Connell fired rounds of 72-68 while Fields shot 71-69. Senior Robert Riesen and sophomore Philip Chauncey both carded six-over 148 totals to tie for 42nd place. Riesen, from Pinehurst, N.C., shot 77-71 while Chauncey, from Durham, N.C., carded rounds of 73-75. Chase MacFarland, a junior from Savannah, Ga., posted rounds of 75-84 for a 159 total and tied for 83rd place.
The event was shortened to 36 holes, all played on Sunday, after heavy rains from tropical storm Hanna fell on the Maryland Eastern Shore on Saturday.
NC State was the runner-up with a 564 total, 20 strokes behind the Razorbacks. Virginia Commonwealth finished third at 565 while host Maryland finished in fifth place at 575, one stroke behind the Tar Heels.
Ethan Tracy of Arkansas captured the individual title after firing a 10-under 132 total with rounds of seven-under 64 and three-under 68. Two players finished four strokes back at six-under 136 - Arkansas' David Lingmerth (69-67) and Texas State's Corey Roberson (67-69). NC State's Matt Hill finished alone in fourth place at 137 after firing rounds of 69-68. Lanto Griffin of Virginia Commonwealth and Andrew Landry of Arkansas tied for fifth place at four-under 138.
The 36-hole event was played at the River Marsh Golf Course, a par 71, 6,801-yard layout, at the Hyatt Regency Chesapeake Bay Resort.
The Tar Heels return to action Sept. 12-14 at the Carpet Capital Collegiate in Rocky Face, Ga.
