GREENSBORO, N.C. - North Carolina's Cetera DeGraffenreid and Virginia's Simone Egwu were named Atlantic Coast Conference Women's Basketball Player and Rookie of the Week, respectively, for the week ending Nov. 22, the league office announced Monday. DeGraffenreid led the fourth-ranked Tar Heels to a pair of victories against Coastal Carolina and UNLV, while Egwu posted a career-high 19 points early in her freshman campaign for the 12th-ranked Cavaliers.
DeGraffenreid played one of the best all-around games of her career against Coastal Carolina, scoring 20 points and adding eight assists, eight steals and six rebounds in 29 minutes of action. The eight steals tied a career-high for the junior from Cullowhee, N.C. DeGraffenreid followed that performance with a 22-point, four-rebound, three-assist outing against UNLV on Sunday. The guard was a perfect 10-for-10 from the foul line against the Rebels, with several coming down the stretch to secure the win.
Egwu registered an impressive two-game showing for Virginia, both at the confines of John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville, Va. The rookie from Odenton, Md., scored a career-high 19 points, including seven-for-nine free throw shooting, against visiting USC Upstate. Egwu then tallied 10 points and six rebounds in front of a new UVa women's basketball record crowd of 11,895 fans against the sixth-ranked Tennessee Volunteers.
ACC action continues this evening as Duke and Wake Forest welcome opponents of Charlotte and Coppin State, respectively, while NC State travels to Old Dominion. Tip time for all three contests is 7 p.m.
