CHAPEL HILL - No. 6 Carolina got four goals from Megan Bosica and three from Jenn Russell as they went on to defeat No. 4 Georgetown 12-7 Saturday afternoon at Fetzer Field. The victory brings the Tar Heel win streak to four games heading into a pair of ACC matches next week. The win also marks the second-straight Saturday in which the Tar Heels (7-2) have knocked off the No.4 ranked team.
The Hoyas (5-3) came out strong early, posting a quick three goals that seemed to have them in complete control. Ashby Kaestner scored in the first 19 seconds and followed two minutes later on a Molly Ford assist to put the Tar Heels in a 2-0 hole. Jordy Kirr then converted a free-position attempt to make it 3-0 after a five minute period in which the Tar Heels failed to have a possession in their offensive half.
Hoping to stop the Hoya's momentum, Coach Jenny Levy called a timeout at the 25:10 mark. From that point forward, the first half belonged to the Tar Heels as they went on a 6-1 run to close the period. Russell started the run with a goal at 21:28 and running-mate Bosica followed 30 seconds later. Another minute passed and another Russell shot found the net to tie it at three.
Kirr momentarily put Georgetown back on top at 17:35, but Bosica answered again for the Tar Heels, this time assisting Kelly and Kristen Taylor in back-to-back goals in a span of less than a minute. She then put in her second goal of the half to give Carolina a 6-4 lead heading into the locker room.
Georgetown came out of the gates strong again in the second half as Jacqueline Giles scored in the first minute and Kirr added her third goal to even the score once again. Play went back-and-forth for six minutes before Bosica stepped up again for the Tar Heels with a free-position goal to give Carolina a 7-6 lead, one they would not lose. Chelsea Parks joined the goal column on a shot from 15-yards and with 15 minutes to play, Carolina had a two goal lead.
Erin Lovett would bring the lead down to one, but the Tar Heels controlled the pace down the stretch with four goals of their own. Bosica tallied her fourth score and Russell added her third on an assist from Amber Falcone, whose strong defensive play helped hold the Hoya's leading-scorer Molly Ford scoreless. Parks then notched her second goal on an assist from Kelly Taylor, who later scored on an assist from her sister, Kristen, to close the game.
Strong in goal once again for Carolina was Logan Ripley who recorded eight saves on the day to earn her seventh win of the season.
Carolina now ventures off to Blacksburg, Virginia where they will take on Virginia Tech Wednesday afternoon at 4 PM. The Tar Heels return to Fetzer Field Saturday, March 28th against Boston College at 11 AM.
