SEACAUCUS, N.J. --- North Carolina senior guard/forward Rashanda McCants became the 15th player in school history to be selected in the WNBA Draft Thursday afternoon at the NBA Entertainment Studios. McCants was selected with the 15th overall pick by the Minnesota Lynx.
"At (pick) 15, we could not believe Rashanda McCants was there still, we had her going to Detroit at 11," Minnesota head coach Don Zierden said. "(She's) long, athletic, can defend all day long...she goes to the boards, which helps us in another area. We had great background check reports on her, so we were very pleased to take her at 15."
A 2009 State Farm All-America honorable mention selection, McCants averaged a team-best 14.4 points per game in leading the Tar Heels to a 28-7 record and a trip to the NCAA Tournament second round. The Asheville, N.C., native played in two Final Fours in her college career and was named second-team All-Atlantic Coast Conference twice.
McCants joins her brother, Rashad, as a professional basketball player, making the duo one of just a handful of brother-sister combinations in WNBA/NBA history. Rashad was also drafted by Minnesota, going 14th overall to the Timberwolves in 2005.
