CHAPEL HILL - The Carolina women's lacrosse team (1-0 this season) will return to the field this weekend for a pair of games, one at home against a ranked opponent and one Sunday for the squad's first road game of the 2010 season. The Tar Heels will host Vanderbilt (0-1), ranked No. 11 in the IWLCA coaches poll, at 6 p.m. on Friday. Carolina will journey to play at Richmond on Sunday at 1 p.m.
The fourth-ranked Tar Heels opened their season with an 18-7 win over Denver last Sunday afternoon at home at Fetzer Field. Carolina returns 10 of 12 starters from last year's squad that reached the fourth NCAA Final Four and the national championship game before losing to Northwestern.
Vanderbilt opened its season with a loss at Duke last weekend.
The Tar Heels got strong play from their senior class against Denver, as Kristen Taylor scored four goals and Jenn Russell and Megan Bosica had three scores apiece. All three earned All-Atlantic Coast Conference honors last year and are All-America candidates this season.
Head coach Jenny Levy acknowledged the season-opening win over Denver but cited the team's 17 turnovers and lack of offensive patience in the game as areas for improvement this weekend.
"Where you start the season doesn't matter; it's where you end," Levy said. "For us, if we focus on process and getting better every day, then we'll have the success that we want."
