Sossah Wins Second-Straight Decathlon Conference Title

Mateo Sossah won his second straight decathlon title as the North Carolina men's and women's track teams continued competition at the 2010 ACC Outdoor Championships on Friday. Seventeen individuals also qualified for finals in nine events as the men jumped to second place at 38 points and the women stand in eighth with 15 points.
Sossah won the decathlon with a total of 7,667 points and claiming two more events of the multi competition on the second day. He is the fourth student-athlete in the league to be a three-time decathlon conference champion and earned All-ACC honors.
Daniel Keller brought home his third outdoor All-ACC honors with his third-place 7,378 finish in the decathlon to join his fellow Tar Heel on the podium. Carolina ended up taking four of the scoring positions for the decathlon as Matthew Villemain placed fifth in a new personal record 6,551 and Chadd Pierce followed in sixth at 6,012. Villemain closed the decathlon with a triumph in the 1500 run of the multis event, toasting the competition by 11 seconds.
Kwabena Keene continued his addition to the men's team total by earning sixth placed in the shot put, throwing 56-6 1/2. Kyle Goodman earned a personal record in the same event, throwing 51-9 3/4. Austin Davis also scored for the squad with an eighth-place finish in the long jump at 22-8.
The men's team saw eight qualifications based on their preliminary runs in four events. In the 100, Jheranie Boyd qualified in 10.54. All three Tar Heels in the 200 qualified for the final, including Charles Cox clocking at 21.16, Clayton Parros at 21.32 and Kelvin Hardesty at 21.52.
Cox and Parros also qualified in the 400 along with Ian Williamson. Cox ran 47.74, Parros 47.38 and Williamson 48.40. The men's 1500 saw Adam Cunningham punch a ticket to the conference final while running 3:53.70. Also in the 1500 was Kyle Milks who ran a personal record 3:53.22.
On the women's side, nine student-athletes qualified for conference finals in five events. Vanneisha Ivy and LaToya James will both compete in the 100-meter hurdle finals running 13.26 and 13.48, respectively. James also qualified for the 400-meter hurdles final with her time of 58.69.
Christine Johnson and Elizabeth Mott represented Carolina in the 400 and both raced to seeds in the finals with Johnson tagging 55.43 and Mott 55.60. Johnson also ran in the 200 where she earned a personal record of 24.28.
Mid-distance events saw four Tar Heels qualify, two in the 800 and two in the 1500. Dominique Jackson raced 2:09.74 and Tasha Stanley took 2:10.23 to compete in Saturday's 800 final. Ashley Verplank and Brie Felnagle will run in the 1500 final after they ran 4:32.59 and 4:29.93, respectively.
The women's heptathlon saw Alexandra Coppadge place fourth and Gabby Gioia seventh to add seven points to the team total. Coppadge scored 5,160 for the combined events and Gioia scored 4,874.
Also adding points to the women's total was Tyler Ford in the long jump. She placed sixth with her leap of 19-5 1/4.
Competition at the 2010 ACC Outdoor Championships concludes on Saturday at the Rock Norman Track Complex at Clemson. The day's events kick-off at 11 a.m. with the women's pole vault final.
