Tar Heel Golfers Tied For The Lead At River Landing Intercollegiate

The North Carolina men's golf team fired a two-under-par 286 in the first round followed by a blistering nine-under 279 in the second round for an 11-under 565 total and is tied with UNC Wilmington for the lead going into Saturday's final round. Junior Henry Zaytoun led the Tar Heels and is in second place in the individual race at five-under 139, just one stroke behind the leader.
Zaytoun and freshman Michael McGowan both fired a four-under-par 68 in the second round to lead the Tar Heels to their 279 total, the low round of the day for any team. Zaytoun, from Raleigh, N.C., fired a one-under 71 in the morning round for his five-under 139 total. McGowan, from Southern Pines, N.C., carded a one-over 73 in the first round for a three-under 141 total and is tied for sixth place. Two other Tar Heels are in the top 15 - senior Chase MacFarland and sophomore Jack Fields. MacFarland, from Savannah, Ga., is tied for 10th place at two-under 142 after firing a two-under 70 in the morning followed by an even par 72 in the afternoon. Fields, from Southern Pines, N.C., is one stroke back in a tie for 14th place with a one-under 143 total. He posted rounds of even-par 72 in the first round followed by a one-under 71 in the second round. Junior Kevin O'Connell, from Cary, N.C., carded rounds of 75-74 for a five-over 149 total and is tied for 43rd place.
Carolina and co-host UNC Wilmington sit atop the 13-team field with an 11-under 565 total, six strokes ahead of Wofford which is in third place at five-under 571. Co-host East Carolina is in fourth place with a 573 total while Michigan State is fifth at 577, VCU is sixth at 579 and Maryland is in seventh place with a 581 total.
Josh Brock of UNC Wilmington grabbed the individual lead by firing a pair of three-under 69s for a six-under 138 total, one stroke ahead of Carolina's Zaytoun and Wofford's Ben Wright at five-under 139. East Carolina's David Wadkins and UNC Wilmington's Ryan Sullivan are tied for fourth place at four-under 140 while four players are tied for sixth place at three-under 141 - Carolina's McGowan, East Carolina's Harold Varner, Maryland's Tom Hanna and UNC Wilmington's Thomas Bass, competing as an individual.
The final round of the 54-hole event will be played Saturday at River Landing's River Course which features a par 72, 6,900-yard layout.
