Four Tar Heels Named All-ACC

Four University of North Carolina women's lacrosse players have earned spots on the 2010 All-Atlantic Coast Conference team, the ACC announced on Wednesday. Attacker Corey Donohoe, goalkeeper Logan Ripley and midfielder Jenn Russell all earned All-ACC accolades for a second time, while defender Mia Hurrin picked up the honor for the first time.
Maryland led the conference with five members of the All-ACC team while UNC and Duke had four apiece. Three Virginia players earned spots on the team and Boston College had two nominees. The 18-member squad was determined by a vote of the league's six head coaches.
Donohoe is is the goal (36) and scoring (53 points) leader for a UNC squad that leads the ACC and ranks third in the nation in scoring offense. She is second on the team in assists with 17. Donohoe also earned All-ACC honors as a freshman in 2008 and is posting her most consistent season yet as a Tar Heel.
Hurrin is the top individual defender on a Carolina team that leads the ACC and ranks third in the nation in scoring defense despite losing 2009 National Defender of the Year Amber Falcone to graduation. Hurrin leads UNC in caused turnovers with 15. She earns All-ACC honors for the first time.
Ripley, a candidate for the 2010 Tewaaraton Trophy given to the nation's top player, ranks second in the nation in goals against average and is a returning first-team All-America. She won the 2009 National Goalkeeper of the Year award given by the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA). Ripley also was an All-ACC choice last spring.
Russell is a candidate for the Tewaaraton Trophy for the second year in a row and is a returning first-team All-America in the midfield. She is one of the strongest leaders in the history of the UNC program and one of the top all-around midfielders in the nation. Russell was an All-ACC choice last year as a junior.
The 2010 ACC Women's Lacrosse Championship will begin Thursday on the campus of Maryland in College Park, Md. The three-day event will be held at the Terrapins' Ludwig Field. As the event's No. 1 seed, UNC received a bye to Friday's semifinal round, where it will face No. 4 seed Duke or No. 5 seed Boston College at 2:30 p.m.
Individual awards, including Player, Coach and Rookie of the Year, will be voted on by the league's head coaches and announced by the league office in May.
