New London, N.C. -
Coming off a team win at the Wolfpack Intercollegiate, the University of North Carolina is in 10th place at the 2010 ACC Men's Golf Championships after the first round of play. The Tar Heels finished the round with a team total nine-over-par 297.
"We got off to a slow start and never got it going - that's a bad combination," said Tar Heel head coach John Inman. "We made some birdies at the end so hopefully we'll get something going tomorrow."
Sophomore Jack Fields led the Tar Heels on Friday with a one-over-par 73 and is tied for 24th place. The Southern Pines, N.C. native fired three birdies, including one on the opening hole. Kevin O'Connell, a junior from Cary, N.C., recorded a two-over-par 74 and is tied for 31st place after hitting a birdie on the 18th hole. Four Carolina golfers birdied 18.
Junior Henry Zaytoun III, a Raleigh, N.C. native, and senior Chase MacFarland, a native of Savannah, Ga., both posted three-over-par 75s to tie for 39th place. Freshman Michael McGowan, a native of Southern Pines, N.C., fired a five-over-par 77 to tie for 49th place.
Georgia Tech leads the 11-team field after the first day of action with a nine-under-par 279. Duke and Wake Forest are tied for second at eight-under par and Clemson holds fourth place at four-under par.
Duke's Adam Long sits atop the player's leader board with a seven-under-par 65. NC State's Matt Hill is currently in second after firing a six-under-par 66 and Wake Forest's Lee Bedford holds third place at five-under par.
The tournament will continue Saturday, April 24 and Sunday April 25 at Old North State Club in New London, N.C. The course features a par 72, 7,102-yard layout.
One Carlyle Cup point will be awarded to either Carolina or Duke, whichever finishes higher, in the ACC Championship. The Carlyle Cup is an all-sport competition between the two schools. Carolina currently leads Duke 14.5-9.5 going into this weekend's competitions (men's golf and women's rowing). The results and breakdown can be found at TarHeelBlue.com. Duke currently leads Carolina by 17 strokes in men's golf.
Live scoring will be available on TarHeelBlue.com and also on Golfstat.com.
