New London, N.C. -
The University of North Carolina men's golf team finished in a tie for ninth place at the Atlantic Coast Conference Championships on Sunday. After shooting a nine-over par 297 in the final round of play, the Tar Heels finished with a 14-over-par 878 to tie Maryland. Sophomore Jack Fields fired an even-par round to lead the Tar Heels.
"We had really high expectations coming in this week and now this is something we have to deal with because we were playing so well," said Tar Heel head coach John Inman.
Fields, a native of Southern Pines, N.C., finished the tournament in a tie for 15th place with a one-under-par 215. Kevin O'Connell, a junior from Cary, N.C., fell into a tie for 34th place on Sunday after he recorded four-over-par 76. O'Connell finished with a five-over-par 221.
Freshman Michael McGowan and junior Henry Zaytoun III tied for 36th place with a seven-over- par 223. McGowan, a native of Southern Pines, N.C., posted a two-over-par 74 in the third round and Zaytoun, a native of Raleigh, N.C., shot a five-over-par 77.
Senior Chase MacFarland moved into 49th place with a 15-over-par 231 total. MacFarland, a Savannah, Ga. native, fired a three-over-par 75 on Sunday.
Georgia Tech defended its ACC men's golf title with an impressive 13-stroke lead over second place Virginia. The Yellow Jackets, who scored a 23-under-par 841 this weekend, won the title in 2009 and this year's win marks their fourth ACC title in the last five years. At 10-under par, Virginia edged Duke and Wake Forest who tied for third place at nine-under par.
Georgia Tech's Chesson Hadley took the individual title with a 10-under-par 206. Hadley has previously finished in the top 10 twice at the ACC Championships. Virginia's Will Collins finished second at eight-under par and NC State's Matt Hill placed third at seven-under par.
The 54-hole tournament was played at Old North State Club in New London, N.C. The course features a par 72, 7,102-yard layout.
One Carlyle Cup point was awarded to Duke as they finished higher than the Tar Heels in the ACC Championship. The Carlyle Cup is an all-sport competition between the two schools. After this weekend's competitions, Carolina leads Duke 14.5-11.5.
The Tar Heels are now waiting to hear if the team will receive a bid to NCAA Regionals.
