CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Six different players scored for North Carolina as the top-ranked Tar Heels defeated defending Big 12 Conference regular-season champion Missouri 6-1 Sunday afternoon before a crowd of 1,255 fans at Fetzer Field in the Carolina Nike Classic. The victory improved the Tar Heels to 3-0-1 on the season and also represented Anson Dorrance's 699th career win as UNC's head mentor. Dorrance saw his record improve to 699-36-23 overall in 32 seasons.
UNC will seek to provide Dorrance with his 700th career win next Saturday at 1 p.m. when it plays host to Tennessee at Fetzer Field.
On Sunday, Carolina broke open a close game with the Tigers by scoring four goals in the final 26 minutes of action. Kealia Ohai, Elizabeth Burchenal, Brittani Bartok, Alyssa Rich, Courtney Jones and Barkley Minton all scored goals for UNC. Courtney Jones and Kelly McFarlane each had three assists for the Tar Heels who had incredible offensive balance Sunday.
UNC outshot the Tigers 32-15 and had 10 corner kicks to two for Missouri. Missouri goalkeeper Jessica Gwin made 12 saves in the game. UNC used three goalkeepers with Anna Sieloff playing 73:44, Hannah Daly 13:21 and Adelaide Gay 2:55. Sieloff had three saves in the match.
Both teams fired away at the goal relentlessly in the first half with UNC outshooting the Tigers 18-6 in the opening 45 minutes. But it took 32 minutes for either team to score. Ohai scored her third goal of the season and second of the weekend on a give-and-go with Courtney Jones. Jones sent a through ball to Ohai who dribbled into the box and scored inside the post to Gwin's left. Just over seven minutes later the Tar Heels padded their lead on freshman Elizabeth Burchenal's first career goal. Kelly McFarlane made a run into the center and fed the ball to Burchenal's feet. With her back to the goal, Burchenal turned and beat the keeper to the left corner from the top of the 18-yard box.
Missouri did not go away quietly and made it 2-1 less than three minutes into the second half on a great individual effort by Alysha Bonnick. The Missouri forward outworked three Tar Heels in the box to emerge with the ball and beat UNC's Anna Sieloff into the side netting from 10 yards away.
The game stayed close until the Tar Heels got some separation at 64:34 as Jones set up another goal. Jones' initial shot from the right side of the box was batted down by the keeper but Brittani Bartok was right there to bounce on the rebound and earn her second goal of the campaign.
The Tar Heels broke the game open about 10 minutes later. At 73:44, Alyssa Rich scored off assists from Courtney Jones and Kelly McFarlane. Exactly one minute later, Jones scored on a breakaway, finishing through the keeper's legs. Rich and McFarlane both assisted on the goal.
UNC closed the scoring at 84:04 as sophomore Barkley Minton scored her first career goal on a 25-yard shot into the upper left corner. Both sophomore Kylie Watt and freshman Elizabeth Burchenal assisted on Minton's goal. It was the first career point for Watt.
