Chapel Hill, N.C. ---- North Carolina football student-athletes Curtis Byrd, James Hurst, Mike Ingersoll and Zack Pianalto have been named to the 2010 All-Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Football Team, announced Wednesday by Commissioner John Swofford.
To be eligible for consideration, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during his academic career. The ACC has selected an All-ACC Academic Football team every year since 1954.
Hurst, a freshman from Plainfield, Ind., was a first-team freshman All-America at offensive tackle by The Sporting News. He started the final 12 games of the season and graded out as the Tar Heels' top offensive linemen.
Byrd, a walk-on fullback from Durham, N.C., started seven games and averaged 35 plays per game over the last nine weeks of the season. He finished his junior campaign with 11 receptions for 77 yards.
Ingersoll, a senior offensive tackle from Mint Hill, N.C., was a two-year starter who graduated in December with a degree in communications and exercise and sport science. This is the second consecutive season Ingersoll has been selected to the team.
Pianalto, a senior from Springdale, Ark., was having his best season as a Tar Heel before fracturing his right fibula in UNC's win at Virginia. He finished the year 30 catches for 311 yards and one touchdown. Pianalto graduated in December with a degree in communications.
North Carolina has had at least one All-ACC Academic Team member every year since 1968.
