North Carolina 9, James Madison 3
Chapel Hill Regional Game 6
Postgame Notes
· With the 3-0 record in the Chapel Hill Regional, Carolina picked up its 35th postseason win since 2006, leading the nation. Cal State Fullerton is second with 27, pending tonight's results.
· Since the NCAA changed to a 64-team tournament in 1999, Carolina has hosted five regionals (four in Chapel Hill, one in Cary) and is 15-0 as the host institution.
· Carolina has now won 14 straight postseason games it has hosted. The Tar Heels last lost as a host in game 2 of the 2007 Chapel Hill Super Regional (South Carolina, 8-6).
· The Tar Heels now advance to their sixth Super Regional since the format was changed in 1999 (2003, 2006-09).
· James Madison plated a run in the first when Matt Tenaglia singled home Johnny Bladel. The run was the first allowed by North Carolina in the regional and ended a 20.2 inning scoreless streak by the Tar Heel pitching staff. Previously, the last run UNC allowed was against Virginia in the ACC tournament with no outs in the seventh inning.
· Carolina starter Chris Munnelly went 4.2 innings and allowed three runs on eight hits. The eight hits allowed ties a career-high for the sophomore (June 6, 2010, vs. Oral Roberts; February 25, 2011 vs. Seton Hall).
· R.C. Orlan moved to 2-0 on the season as he pitched a scoreless inning while allowing a hit and striking out a batter. Orlan combined with five other relievers to shut out the Dukes over the final 4.1 innings, as the bullpen only allowed three hits and a walk.
· Tommy Coyle led the Carolina offense with three hits, which ties a season-high for the sophomore (six other occasions). Coyle finished the regional 5-for-12 (.417)
· Chaz Frank tied a career-high with 3 RBIs (March 16, 2010 vs. Princeton; May 10, 2011 vs. UNC Wilmington) as he singled home runs in the second and seventh and recorded a sacrifice fly in the seventh.
· Freshman designated hitter Brian Holberton recorded his first career NCAA tournament hit and RBI when he drove in Jacob Stallings with a double in the second inning. He also drove in Stallings with a RBI single to center in the fifth and singled in the eighth to tie a career-high with three hits (March 25 vs. Duke).
· Stallings had another productive night at the plate with a RBI double and two runs scored. The junior backstop finished the regional 5-for-11 (.455) with seven runs and four RBIs while reaching base safely in seven of 13 plate appearances.
· Stallings also registered his 31st caught stealing of the year, extending his own school record, when he threw out Conner Brown in the sixth inning.
· Levi Michael and Seth Baldwin both logged their first hit of the regional as Michael doubled and scored in the sixth while Baldwin repeated that feat in the seventh.
· JMU catcher Jake Lowery launched a two-run home run in the fifth inning, his second of the regional and 24th of the season. That mark ties the JMU and Colonial Athletic Association single-season record. He also extended his single-season school and conference RBI record to 91. The junior went 6-for-15 (.400) with 8 runs batted in during the Chapel Hill regional.
