CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Ryan Flanagan of the University of North Carolina men's lacrosse team was named recently to the Lowe's Senior CLASS First-Team All-America Team. The senior defenseman from West Islip, N.Y., was one of the top five vote getters in national fan voting as well as ballots casts by coaches and media.
Brian Karalunas of Villanova University was selected as the 2011 Lowe's Senior CLASS Award winner in men's lacrosse. The announcement and trophy presentation were made in Baltimore by Lowe's, an official corporate partner of the NCAA®, during the NCAA Division I Men's Lacrosse Championship.
Karalunas and Flanagan were joined on the first-team by midfielder Kevin Crowley of Stony Brook, goalkeeper John Galloway of Syracuse and midfielder Jonathan Stumpf of Lehigh.
The second team All-America Team consisted of attackman Stefan Bauer of Lafayette, attackman Grant Catalino of Maryland, goalkeeper Johnathan Falcone of Yale, midfielder Anthony Iannello of Bryant and long-stick midfielder Tom Montelli of Duke.
The award, chosen by a nationwide vote of Division I head coaches, national media and fans, is given annually to the most outstanding senior student-athlete in NCAA Division I men's lacrosse. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence - community, classroom, character and competition.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
