The North Carolina men's golf team opened up its fall campaign with a fifth-place finish at the Wolverine Intercollegiate. Carolina carded a 9-over-par 293 in the final round to finish at 14-over 866. Three Tar Heels tied for 22nd place in the individual race.
"Today was unfortunately status quo," said Tar Heel head coach Andrew Sapp. "We started in fifth and ended in fifth. We had some solid rounds of even par by Matt (Raudenbush) and Bailey (Patrick), who played as an individual. Along with Patrick (Barrett), these guys all tied for 22nd. Today we lacked that fourth score to keep it around par.
"Overall, everyone had at least one good round in the tournament, but we need to improve consistency. The greens at UM are very tough and we struggled on them so we will get home and continue to work on our short games in preparation for VCU. The freshmen gained some valuable experience this week which will hopefully pay off for their future. There were a lot of positives, but still a lot of work to be done to improve."
Seniors Patrick Barrett and Matt Raudenbush along with freshman Bailey Patrick all posted 4-over-par 217 totals to finish deadlocked in 22nd place. Raudenbush, from Pine Valley, N.J., was 2-over at the turn, but picked up birdies on holes 14 and 17 to finish at even par 71. Barrett, from Pinehurst, N.C., carded four bogies and three birdies for 1-over 72 in the final round. Patrick, from Charlotte, N.C., also carded an even par 71 on Tuesday. Competing as an individual, Patrick carded four birdies and four bogies for his even par score. Brandon Dalinka, a freshman from Newtown, Pa., fired a 2-over 73 in the final round for a 5-over 218 total to finish alone in 25th place. Junior Michael McGowan, from Southern Pines, N.C., finished one stroke back in a tie for 26th after carding a 77 in the final round. Zach Munroe, another freshman from Charlotte, tied for 35th place with a 223 total after shooting an 80 on Tuesday.
California captured the team title over the 11-team field after firing a 1-under 283 in the final round for a 13-under 839 total. Baylor was the runner-up, finishing at 1-under 851 after posting a 5-over 289 on Tuesday. Michigan State finished two strokes back in third place at 853 while Missouri was fourth at 854. The Tar Heels' 866 total put them in fifth place, one stroke ahead of host Michigan and IUPUI.
Jace Long of Missouri captured the individual title with a 7-under-par 206 total after firing a 5-under 66 in the final round. California's Joel Stalter, the leader going into the final round, finished just one stroke back in second place at 207 after posting a 1-over 72 on Tuesday. Emilio Cuartero of Missouri finished third at 208 while Baylor's Ryan O'Rear finished fourth at 209. Three players tied for fifth place with 2-under 211 totals - Michigan State's Dan Ellis and California's Max Horna and Michael Kim.
The 54-hole event was played at U-M Golf Course which features a par 71, 6,887-yard layout. The Tar Heels travel to Richmond, Va., Sept. 26-27 to play in the VCU Shootout.
