Tar Heel Golfers 13th At Puerto Rico Classic

The North Carolina men's golf team carded a 308 on Monday and stands in 13th place with a 610 total after the second round of the Puerto Rico Classic. The Tar Heels were led by Michael McGowan on Monday as he fired a 1-over-par 73.
McGowan carded two birdies and three bogeys for his 1-over 73. The junior from Southern Pines, N.C., has a 4-over 148 total and is tied for 37th place. Bailey Patrick and Patrick Barrett are both tied for 57th place with 153 totals. Patrick , a freshman from Charlotte, N.C., carded a 5-over 77 in the second round while Barrett, a redshirt junior from Pinehurst, N.C., shot a 79 on Monday. Junior Clark Palmer and freshman Zack Munroe are tied for 65th with 157 totals. Munroe, from Charlotte, shot a 79 in the second round while Palmer, from Augusta, Ga., carded an 80.
Alabama still leads the 15-team field with a 21-under-par 555 total. The Crimson Tide and second-place Purdue both fired a 9-under 279 on Monday. The host Boilermakers stand at 8-under 568. Clemson is in third place, one stroke behind Purdue, at 7-under 569 after scoring a 2-under 286 in the second round. Virginia Tech is fourth at 575, Georgia is fifth at 577, Oklahoma is sixth at 578, and two teams, Georgia Tech and Oklahoma State, are tied for seventh at 579.
James White, a senior from Georgia Tech, grabbed the second round individual lead. White, who was tied for sixth place entering Monday's play, fired a 6-under-par 66 for an 8-under 136 total. White holds a two-stroke advantage over a pair of Alabama golfers, Bobby Wyatt and Justin Thomas, who are tied for second place at 6-under 138. Tyler Duncan of Purdue is alone in fourth place at 5-under 139 after firing a 6-under 66 in the second round. Three players are deadlocked in fifth place at 3-under 141 - Purdue's William Sjaichudin, Virginia Tech's Trevor Cone and Oklahoma State's Talor Gooch.
The final round of the 54-hole event will be played Tuesday at Rio Mar Country Club's River Course which features a par 72, 6,902-yard layout. Live scoring is available at Golfstat.com.
