GREENSBORO, N.C. --- North Carolina senior Chay Shegog earned second-team All-Atlantic Coast Conference honors and classmate Laura Broomfield garnered honorable mention accolades in a vote by the league's Blue Ribbon Panel, league commissioner John Swofford announced Monday.
Shegog finished fourth in the league in scoring with 16.1 points per game and also ranked third in blocked shots (2.3/game) and field goal percentage (.530). The Stafford, Va., center also recorded a team-high eight double-doubles, good for third in the ACC, and was the only player in the top 12 in the ACC in scoring that did not have a teammate averaging double figure points.
Despite constant double-teams, Shegog also ranks 22nd in the NCAA in field goal percentage and has scored in double figures in 23 of 29 games. After not scoring 20 points in a game prior to 2011-12, Shegog has tallied 20-plus points 11 times as a senior.
Broomfield finished with 234 total rebounds in 24 regular season games to edge Maryland's Tianna Hawkins for the ACC rebounding title. The Lexington Park, Md., forward averaged 9.8 boards per game as well as ranking 14th in field goal percentage (.462) and eighth in blocks (1.2). Broomfield grabbed 10-plus boards in 11 of her 24 games, and 14 or more in five contests.
Neither player had earned All-ACC honors prior to 2012. Shegog received an all-freshman team selection in 2009.
Shegog, Broomfield and the rest of the Tar Heels open the 2012 ACC Tournament with 12th-seeded Clemson Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Greensboro Coliseum.
