Tar Heel Men Sit At Sixth After The First Round

ROCKY FACE, GA.-The North Carolina men's golf team opened up their fall tournament schedule at the Carpet Capital Collegiate and is tied for sixth overall. The men sit close to the middle of the pack after shooting a 3-over-par 291. The team was even par after the first nine holes but struggled to keep pace on the second half of the course. Senior Tar Heel Michael McGowan is tied for fifth in individual scores after shooting a 3-under-par 69 on Friday.
McGowan, from Southern Pines, N.C., penciled five birdies and two bogeys in Friday's first round. He finished his round well going 2-under on his last nine holes and knocking down a birdie on the course's highest scoring hole (8) and sits tied for fifth overall. Freshman Keagan Cummings, from Dublin, Ireland, and Senior Patrick Barrett, from Pinehurst, N.C., both shot 4-over, and finished their rounds poorly. Barrett finished his last two holes going bogey, double bogey, while Cummings bogeyed five of his last eight holes including his last two holes. Cary native, and Junior transfer, Andy Knox shot a 14-over 86. Sophomore Brandon Dalinka went on a tear his last six holes making a birdie on four of them including the last two holes. Dalinka, from Newton, Pa., was 2-over before getting on his hot streak, ending the day at 2-under 70. Dalinka sits tied for eighth, one stroke behind teammate McGowan.
The day was Georgia's as the Bulldogs shot a tournament high 10-under-par and lead second place, Alabama (-4), by a comfortable six strokes. Leading the Bulldogs is T.J. Mitchell who knocked down eight birdies and just one bogey to shoot a career low 7-under 65. LSU (-2), Wake Forest (E), and Auburn (+1) are the other teams ahead of North Carolina.
Bobby Wyatt of Alabama was 7-under-par until the 17th hole where he double bogeyed, but still sits at second place. Niclas Carlsson, from Auburn, and Lee McCoy from Georgia turned in a 4-under round to tie for third. Michael McGowan shares fifth with Dykes Harbin from South Carolina, and Brandon Stone from Texas.
The event continues through Sunday at The Farm Golf Club, which boasts a par 72, 7012-yard challenge. Live scoring is available on Golfstat.com
