Tar Heel Men Earn At-Large National Bid

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The Carolina men's cross country team earned an at-large bid for the 2013 Division I Cross Country Championships for the first time since 1991, as announced by the NCAA Saturday.
The national meet will be held Saturday, Nov. 23, in Terre Haute, Ind. The Tar Heel men last ran at the 1991 championships, where they finished 22nd.
Ryan Walling, John Raneri and Isaac Presson earned All-Region honors as the men's team finished fourth at Friday's Southeast Regional Championships in Earlysville, Va. Annie LeHardy and Lizzy Whelan also earned All-Region honors on the women's side.
In addition to the men's at-large bid, LeHardy also qualified individually for the national meet after finishing seventh in the women's 6K with a personal best time of 20:19.7. LeHardy's participation will secure the women's fourth-straight appearance at the NCAA Championships.
Thirty-one teams were selected to participate in each of the men's and women's championships. The top two, seven-person teams automatically qualified from each of the nine regions, for a total of 18 teams. Thirteen additional teams were selected at-large.
