Griffin, Tar Heels Lead Rod Myers In Halted Second Round

DURHAM, N.C. - The North Carolina men's golf team holds a two-shot lead over the field at 15-under-par in the second round of the Rod Myers Invitational before weather halted play. Freshman Ben Griffin is tied for the lead at 7-under through eight holes in the second round.
"Second-round play was officially suspended at 5:29 p.m. due to extensive lightning activity in the Durham area," said Matt Plizga of Duke University. "Teams will return to the course to complete action tomorrow at 9:00 a.m. The tournament will be shortened to a 36-hole event with additional weather conditions anticipated to affect tomorrow's play as well."
A native of Chapel Hill, Griffin shot a 5-under 67 in the first round with a string of four birdies on holes No. 4 through No. 7, followed by two birdies and one bogey. He led the tournament after the first round and made three birdies and one bogey in the second round before stopping after No. 8. Freshman William Register also started the first round strong, finishing in 2nd at 4-under 68 with an eagle on the par-5 9th, four birdies, and two bogeys. Register, a native of Burlington, N.C. and champion at the Primland Invitational two weeks ago, has two birdies in the second round to sit at 6-under in 3rd through six holes. Brandon Dalinka is tied for 10th after an opening round even-par 72 that included a pair of birdies and bogeys. The senior from Newtown, Pa. started his second round with two birdies and is currently at 2-under through No. 8. Henry Do made the turn in the first round at 4-under with three birdies in a row on No. 7 through No. 9 before finishing with a 1-under 71. Do, a sophomore from Canton, Mich., has two bogeys and one birdie in the second round through No. 8 and currently sits in a tie for 19th at even-par. Rounding out the team is senior Bailey Patrick from Charlotte, N.C. who began his day with three birdies before finishing with two bogeys and a triple-bogey to end at 2-over 74. Patrick bogeyed the opening hole of his second round and sits in a tie for 37th at 3-over through No. 10.
Playing as an individual this week, Zachary Martin shot an opening-round even-par 72 with three birdies and bogeys. The sophomore from Pinehurst is 2-under in his second round with three birdies through No. 11 and is tied for 10th. Reeves Zaytoun also traveled as an individual this week and finished with an opening-round 8-over 80. In his second round, the native senior from Raleigh is even-par through No. 10.
"Through Round One, we played very well and got off to a good start for Round Two," said Head Coach Andrew Sapp. "We need to come out tomorrow and finish off this round well. Unfortunately, this event is only going to be 36 holes, but we always tell our guys to be prepared for that possibility with weather."
The Tar Heels held a three-shot lead after the first round and currently hold a two-shot lead over East Carolina at 15-under. They have between seven and 12 holes remaining. East Carolina finished the first round at 7-under 281 and is 6-under in the second round on the back nine. Baylor sits in 3rd after an opening-round 2-under 286. The Bears have the best 2nd round currently with a 7-under start. They are playing with North Carolina. Michigan State sits in a distant 4th at 1-over with 12 to 17 holes remaining after an opening round even-par 288. Liberty is in sole 5th at 2-over, dropping three shots in the second round after a 1-under 287 first round. Tulsa is 6-over in the second round after a 2-under 286 first round to sit at 4-over. Duke and Northwestern are tied for 7th at 7-over after opening rounds of 3-over 291 and 7-over 295, respectively.
Griffin of North Carolina is tied for the lead at 7-under with George Kilgore of East Carolina*. Kilgore shot a 4-under 68 opening round and is 3-under through six. William Register of North Carolina is in 3rd at 6-under through six after an opening-round 4-under 68. Matt Rushton of Notre Dame* is in 4th at 4-under through eight with an opening-round 4-under 68. Three Baylor players are tied for 5th at 3-under: Freddy Anderson (I), Filippo Zucchetti, and Kyle Jones, along with Hutson Chandler of Liberty and Al Dickens of East Carolina*. Zach Martin (I) and Brandon Dalinka of North Carolina, Sam Weatherhead of Michigan State*, and Mathieu Fenasse of Liberty round out the top 10 at 2-under.
The now 36-hole event is being played at Duke University Golf Club with a par-72, 7136-yard layout. The event will conclude Sunday morning at 9:00 a.m. from where play left off in the second round. Live Scoring is available on GoHeels.com.
