Golfers Climb To 12th In Country, Freshmen in Top 30
October 27, 2014 | Men's Golf
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The North Carolina men's golf team continues to lower scores and rise in the ranks, now ranked 12th in the nation, according to the latest rankings from Golfweek.com. Freshmen William Register and Ben Griffin also moved up in the Top 30, including Register in 18th individually and Griffin at 26th.
"Rankings are nice to have and it is definitely one of our team goals to be ranked in the top 25 all year, but rankings are a byproduct of playing well," Head Coach Andrew Sapp said. "Reflecting on our fall season, one of the things I am most proud of is that we finished all five tournaments under par. That is a very nice accomplishment, and it shows that we have a lot of firepower to make birdies. Winning multiple tournaments this fall was one of our goals as well, and we are glad we were able to accomplish that this past weekend. Honestly, the majority of our team goals are related to the post season, and that is a long way off, so we can't be satisfied where we are and we need to keep improving. Playing well in September and October is important, but we want to play well in April, May and June."
Griffin picked up his second win of the season this past weekend at the Bridgestone Golf Collegiate in Greensboro, N.C. His other title was at home in the Tar Heel Intercollegiate. Register has captured one title, breaking the 54-hole record held at Carolina, at the Primland Collegiate Invitational in September.
Brandon Dalinka is also ranked in the Top 150 at 122nd.
Carolina is the 3rd highest ACC team, with a 70.32 rating*, behind Florida State at #2 and Wake Forest at #8.
