November 12, 2014 | Men's Golf
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – University of North Carolina men's golf coach Andrew Sapp announced the signing of three players who will join the Tar Heels for the 2015-16 season – Joshua Martin of Pinehurst, N.C., Preyer Fountain of Raleigh, N.C. and Tailin (Toby) Song of Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.
“Our 2015 class continues to add tremendous experience and depth to our Carolina Golf Program,” says Sapp. “All three players have the desire to win championships and compete at the highest level. This is a very strong class that will help us continue the success we have had this year for years to come.”
Martin, who plays at Pinecrest High School, is an 2012 AJGA Rolex All-America and is currently ranked 14th nationally in the 2015 class and is the #1 ranked player in the state of North Carolina according to Golfweek. Martin won the 2014 North Carolina Amateur Championship with rounds of 67-65-71-67 becoming the youngest champion in event's history. He was also the runner-up at the 2014 AJGA Davis Love III Junior Open and placed 4th at the 2014 Bobby Chapman Junior Invitational. Martin is also a two-time qualifier for the U.S. Amateur Championship, 2013 and 2014 and played on the 2013 N.C. 4A State High School Championship team.
“I chose Carolina because of the golf team's tradition of excellence both on and off the course,” says Martin. “I am excited to be a part of the players that the coaches have brought to Carolina because we are all going to be striving for the same goal of winning a National Championship.”
“Joshua was highly recruited and we are fortunate to have won the recruiting battle with many other great ACC schools,” says Sapp. “He has been very good for a very long time and he will continue to improve during his time in Chapel Hill. With Joshua, we are not only adding the N.C. Amateur Champion, the best junior golfer in our state and one of the best junior golfers in the country, but also a young man who has already had success on the amateur stage as well. We are thrilled he chose to be a Tar Heel.”
Fountain, who plays at Broughton High School, has enjoyed a very successful high school career as Broughton captured the 2012 and 2014 N.C. 4A State Championships. Fountain, a three-time selection to the All-Conference Team (2012, 2013, 2014), was selected to the 2014 All-State Team, the 2014 Triangle All-Metro Team and was the 2014 CAP 8 Conference Player of the Year. He qualified for the prestigious 2014 Callaway Junior World Golf Championships played at Torrey Pines Golf Course in San Diego, Calif. Fountain placed 6th at the 2014 Carolinas Junior Boys Championship and captured two wins in 2013 – the Webb Simpson Challenge and the UNC State Junior Championship.
“”I've been a Tar Heel all my life, so it fulfills a dream to come play for Carolina and Coach Sapp,” says Fountain. “This is a special team and I want to do all I can to help us win ACC and National Championships.”
“Preyer is the consummate team player,” says Sapp. “Playing on State High School Championship teams and being a leader will add a lot to our roster. We have watched Preyer for some time now and he has improved every single year since his freshman year. As he continues on that trend, he will definitely help us in our goal to win championships.”
Song, who plays at Torrey Pines High School, has seen much success in his junior career. He was the champion at the 2014 San Diego Country Club High School Tournament and was the runner-up at both the 2014 San Diego Junior Amateur Championship and the 2014 FCG Future Championship. Song placed 6th at the prestigious 2014 Callaway Junior World Golf Championship which was played at Torrey Pines. He captured the title at the 2013 San Diego Section CIF Championship and finished 5th at the 2013 California State Championship. Also, during the last two years, Song has seven top-10 finishes on the SCPGA Toyota Tour Cup Series.
“I chose to become a Tar Heel because of the all-around excellence of UNC's academics and athletics and to be a part of a National Championship team,” says Song.
“We are excited to have Toby coming from California to join the Tar Heels, “ added Sapp. “When he came to visit, he was impressed with our golf course and our practice facilities, as well as their proximity to campus. Toby is a guy we think will benefit greatly from being a part of the competitive environment we have within our team. We can't wait for him to join us next fall.”
