December 1, 2014 | Women's Basketball
Gray had nine rebounds and was 3 of 4 on 3-pointers while Latifah Coleman was 4 of 4 on 3-point attempts and finished with 16 points.
Hawaii was led by Shawna-Lei Kuehu with 28 points, including 14 of 16 from the line. Destiny King had 13 points and 10 boards.
Coleman, a senior, was named the tournament MVP and Gray joined her on the all-tournament team.
“It was a tough game and we knew it would be on Hawaii's home court,” UNC coach Sylvia Hatchell said. “They have a very good team and they had a big homecourt advantage. I thought we dug deep and had some kids step up. Latifah keeps playing well. We had several come off the bench and really play well for us – our depth really made a difference."
The Tar Heels (7-0) trailed by one with 6:11 left in the first but Gray nailed a pair of 3-pointers to take a 5-point lead and UNC led 39-31 at intermission.
The second-half lead reached as much as 13, but Hawaii (4-3) hung tough, as an 11-2 run brought the Rainbow Wahine to within four, at 62-58, with 4:23 left.
North Carolina made 8 of 10 free throws down the stretch to ice it.
UNC will face #21 Rutgers in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge Thursday at 7 p.m. in Piscataway, N.J. The Big Ten Network will carry the game.
“Overall, it's been a fantastic week," Hatchell said. "We grew up a lot. We've had some good experiences and had wonderful fans who came over here to support us. The weather was fantastic. Now we'll go home and get ready to go to Rutgers and play on Thursday.”
