Tar Heels Fall to 15th Place In Puerto Rico

RIO GRANDE, P.R. - The North Carolina men's golf team , after carding a 7-over-par 295 in Sunday's first round, finished Monday with a 13-over 301 to stand at 20-over with a 596 total in 15th place. Freshman Davis Bateman, after carding a 4-under-68 the first round, shot a 2-over 74 in the second to stand in a tie for 20th at 2-under on the River Course at Rio Mar Country Club.
"This was a difficult day for us," said Head Coach Andrew Sapp. "I am in a bit of a shock by our poor play and lack of toughness. We have to go out tomorrow and play for pride and make the final round our best round. If all of these other teams can shoot under par in a round I know we can. We just need to maintain confidence and not let adversity rattle us like it has this week."
Bateman, from Charlotte, N.C., after starting the day with three birdies in five holes, carded five bogeys to give him his 2-over 74, eleven strokes behind the leader. Another freshman, Henry Do, fired a 2-over 74 with three birdies, three bogeys and one double-bogey. Do, from Canton, Mich., is tied for 41st after ending Sunday in a tie for 33rd place. Junior Bailey Patrick finished Monday with a 4-over 76 with two birdies and six bogeys. Patrick, from Charlotte, N.C., moved into a tie for 56th and stands at 6-over overall. Junior Brandon Dalinka and sophomore Keagan Cummings improved on their first round scores but still shot a 5-over 77 each. Newtown, Pa. native Dalinka is tied for 72nd place while Cummings, from Dublin, Ireland, stands alone in 74th.
Alabama beat their incredible 15-under-par 273 first round score with a 16-under 272 Monday to hold a commanding lead out of the 15 teams at 31-under 545. Georgia Tech moved into sole second after an 11-under 277 day, ten strokes back of Alabama, and Georgia holds third at 17-under after a 7-under 281 day. Clemson jumped to fourth place with a 12-under 276 day to stand at 13-under overall, followed by host Purdue in fifth at 5-under 571. Virginia Tech stands in sixth at 3-under 573 while Oklahoma sits in seventh after a 6-under 282 day to move to 1-over.
Alabama's Robby Shelton jumped ahead of Purdue's Adam Schenk with an 8-under 64 to lead the field at 13-under. Adam Schenk holds second alone at 10-under after a 4-under 68. Joey Garber of Georgia also carded a 4-under 68 to move to 9-under overall. Three players hold fourth, each at 7-under: Anders Albertson of Georgia Tech, Bo Andrews of Georgia Tech, and Miller Capps of Clemson. Trey Mullinax of Alabama and Cody Proveaux of Clemson carded rounds of 69 and 68 Monday to move into a tie for seventh at 6-under. Rounding out the top ten is Georgia Tech's Ollie Schniederjans and Georgia's Greyson Sigg, both at 5-under after shooting 3-under 69s on Monday.
The 54-hole event is being played at Rio Mar Country Club's River Course which features a par 72, 6,902-yard layout. Live scoring is available throughout the event at GoHeels.com and Golfstat.com.
