Opening Statement – Sylvia Hatchell
“We did a lot of good things I thought, especially in the first half. The freshmen are learning and settling down, Destinee [Walker] had a great game. Stephanie [Watts] got to the basket, she just has to finish some of that, but they're going to get better and better and we've got a lot of other players that are stepping up. They're working hard, and they're going to be in shape, no doubt about that. It's good to have six players in double figures, which is a good balance that we really like. We had 22 assists – I like that – and 23 steals, so some good things. I just wish we had rebounded a little better but we'll keep working on that. We're excited about getting started on Friday against Gardner Webb.”
To Jamie Cherry: Do you and Destinee bump heads playing the same position?
“I don't think we bump heads at all. I like to see her score – I like to see everybody score. It takes pressure off of me to watch her sit back, get comfortable and score, and of course it puts more points on the board so I really don't think so.”
Continued: Do you lead/advise her in practice?
“It just depends. I feel like she's really good at reading so at points you just have to tell her to slow down and play the offense, but I was like that my freshman year. It's just a thing. Ball guards that come in here just have to learn the system and learn to play within it.”
To Destinee Walker: What's it like having Jamie be able to find you?
“It feels great. Coming from high school, I was always the person to bring the ball up, the ball handler, so having the chance to be able to switch off but still bring up the ball sometimes is nice. Me being able to get her open and her being able to get me open – we just work well together.”
