Tar Heels Collar Bulldogs
November 29, 2015 | Women's Basketball
Destinee Walker led everyone with 17 points, her eighth double figure scoring game this season. North Carolina (5-3) also received 14 points from Jamie Cherry, 13 points from Xylina McDaniel and a double-double performance from Hillary Summers with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
McDaniel was clutch down the stretch for the Tar Heels. Her three-point play put Carolina in the lead for good with under a minute to play. She later iced the victory with two free throws with less than 10 seconds to play.
After a quite first half, Walker came to life in the third quarter with five points and a 42-39 Tar Heel advantage after a layup for the ACC's leading freshman scorer. However, the Bulldogs had six of the last eight points of the period to take a slim, 45-44, lead to the fourth quarter.
Carolina was plagued with turnover issues in the first quarter. Eleven turnovers allowed the Bulldogs to grab an early 11-5 advantage, but the Tar Heels clawed their way back to trail by just two, 12-10 after 10 minutes.
Stephanie Watts, who came off the bench for the first time, opened the second stanza with a three-pointer, giving Carolina its first lead at 13-12. That bucket was part of a 15-1 run that spanned the first two quarters that saw UNC take a 20-12 lead over the Zags.
The Bulldogs responded with a run of their own to tie the game at 22-22, but Bryant knocked down a pair of jumpers late in the quarter to give Carolina a 30-24 lead at the half.
North Carolina hosts No. 19 Northwestern on Wednesday, Dec. 2 at 6 p.m. on ESPN3.
