Golfers Sit In 13th At Puerto Rico Classic

RIO GRANDE, P.R. - The North Carolina men's golf team carded a 13-over-par 301 in the first round of the Puerto Rico Classic and stands tied for 13th place. Sophomore Henry Do led the Tar Heels with a 1-under-71 on the River Course at Rio Mar Country Club.
“Henry [Do] played well today which was good to see,” said Head Coach Andrew Sapp. “The rest of the guys struggled. This will be a great learning opportunity as we try to dig ourselves out of a hole.”
Do, from Canton, Mich., started off with a birdie on the 4th hole in the shotgun start, followed by another birdie and a bogey and 15 pars to finish at 1-under 71 in a tie for 11th. Carter Jenkins, a sophomore transfer from Raleigh, shot a 4-over 76 on the day, including one birdie and five bogeys. Jenkins sits in a tie for 45th heading into Monday. Ben Griffin also had some difficulty on the day, carding a 5-over 77 to put him in a tie for 53rd. Griffin, a freshman native of Chapel Hill, N.C., made three birdies on the day, along with six bogeys and a double bogey on the par-3 3rd hole. Senior Brandon Dalinka, from Newtown, Pa., also tied for 53rd with a 5-over 77 that saw just one birdie and six bogeys. Rounding out the team, freshman William Register shot a 7-over 79, which included one birdie, six bogeys, and one double-bogey, putting him in a tie for 65th.
“We are looking for a strong bounce back round tomorrow with the goal being to win the round,” Sapp said. “We just need to keep our focus and confidence and we will play well.”
Georgia fired a hot 8-under-par 280 and leads the field of 14 teams by five strokes. Alabama snuck into second place with a 3-under 285, with Virginia Tech in third at 1-under 287. Clemson moved to fourth at even-par 288. Oklahoma sits in fifth at 3-over 291, followed closely by Georgia Tech in 6th at 4-over 292. Minnesota, Nebraska, Michigan, and tied for 7th at 8-over 292, followed by Purdue and UNCG tied for 10th at 10-over 298.
Scott Vincent out of Virginia Tech took a commanding lead in the tournament with a 5-under 67 Sunday. A five-way tie for second at 3-under 69 includes Georgia's Nicholas Reach and Sepp Straka, Clemson's Miller Capps, Alabama's Robby Shelton, and Oklahoma's Grant Hirschman. Jacob Joiner of Georgia Tech, Billy Kennerly of Clemson, Trevor Cone of Virginia Tech, and Tom Lovelady of Alabama round out the top 10 at 2-under 70.
The 54-hole event is being played at Rio Mar Country Club's River Course, which features a par 72, 6,902-yard layout. There will be an 8 a.m. EST shotgun start for Monday's second round. Live scoring is available throughout the event at GoHeels.com and BirdieFire.com.
