CHAPEL HILL – Second-ranked North Carolina got multiple goals from seven different players and dominated Elon, 21-2, on a cold, rainy Sunday afternoon at Navy Field. The Tar Heels out-shot the Phoenix, 46-8, in the game and controlled the draw throughout much of the contest, 18-7.
Senior Lindsay Scott led Carolina with four goals, adding an assist for five total points. Sydney Holman and Sam McGee (two goals and three assists apiece) both also tallied five points. Aly Messinger scored three goals and Ela Hazar had two goals and two assists. Brittney Coppa and Carly Reed both scored twice. Eleven Tar Heels scored goals in the contest, and 15 of Carolina's 21 goals were assisted.
Elon got goals from Elle Hvozdovic and Sloane Kessler and an assist from Nicole Sinacori.
The Tar Heels dominated from start to finish, out-shooting the Phoenix, 28-1, and winning 14 of 17 draws in the opening half. Scott and Messinger had hat tricks in the first alone, and Holman had two goals and three assists in the opening 30 minutes.
Caylee Waters (4-1) started in goal and played the first half, saving the only shot Elon attempted against her. Megan Ward played the second half in the cage, allowing two goals and making two saves in the final 30:00.
The Tar Heels led 6-0 after less than 10 minutes of play and had a 16-0 lead at the break.
The game was originally slated to be played on the grass at Fetzer Field but was moved to the artificial turf at Navy Field due to snow in Chapel Hill earlier this week. Carolina will return to action next Saturday at home when it hosts Virginia at Fetzer Field.
