April 11, 2015 | Men's Golf
AMHERST, VA. – William Register held onto his share of the lead through the final round at the Liberty Spring Invitational to finish at 3-under-par 213. The Tar Heels finished in second at 2-under 862.
“It was nice to see William [Register] finish in a tie for first this week,” Head Coach Andrew Sapp said.
Register, a freshman from Burlington, N.C., started the final round at 7-under 137 but struggled in the windy conditions Saturday. He made two birdies, four bogeys, and one double in the final round on route to a 4-over 76. Despite the rocky finish, this is Register's second title of the season.
Freshman Ben Griffin also finished in a tie for 10th after a strong final round 2-under 70 which saw seven birdies and only five bogeys. The Chapel Hill native ended 1-under 215. Carter Jenkins also finished high for the Tar Heels in a tie for 13th at 1-over 217. The sophomore from Raleigh, N.C. carded three birdies and four bogeys in the final round 1-over 73. Sophomore Henry Do finished not far behind Jenkins in a tie for 19th at 3-over 219. Do, out of Canton, Mich., struggled in the final round with three birdies, four bogeys, and two double-bogeys in his 5-over 77 round. Brandon Dalinka also finished in the top 30 in a tie for 27th at 7-over 223 after a 4-over 76 final round.
“As a team, we played the final 27 holes rather poorly, but we can learn from this and work really hard over the next 12 days in preparation for ACCs,” Sapp said.
Oklahoma took a 5-shot lead into the final round and didn't let up, as the Sooners shot a 3-under 285 in the final round to finish at 17-under 847. The Tar Heels finished 15 shots back at 2-under 862 after a 7-over 295. Host Liberty finished in a distant third at 12-over 876. Lipscomb ended in fourth at 14-over 878, while Campbell and Radford tied for fifth at 20-over 884. Columbia, Northern Illinois, Loyola (Maryland), and Wright State rounded out the top 10.
There was a six-way tie for first in the inaugural Liberty Spring Invitational, as Isaiah Logue and Mathieu Fenasse, both from Liberty; Beau Titsworth, Grant Hirschman, and Charlie Saxon, all of Oklahoma; and William Register of North Carolina tied for first at 3-under 213. Mikko Lehtovuori of Campbell, Michael Gellerman of Oklahoma, and Dawson Armstrong of Lipscomb tied for seventh at 2-under 214. Christopher Crawford of Drexel and Ben Griffin of North Carolina rounded out the top 10 at 1-under 215.
The Tar Heels will be back in action again at the ACC Championships, Fri.-Sun., April 24-26 in New London, N.C. For more information on Tar Heel Men's Golf, please visit goheels.com.
