DENVER – Former University of North Carolina women's lacrosse midfielder and 2013 National Player of the Year Kara Cannizzaro has joined the coaching staff at University of Denver as a volunteer assistant coach, head coach Liza Kelly announced on Thursday.
“We are so excited to have a player of Kara's caliber join the staff,” Kelly said. “Her championship experience will really demonstrate to the team what it takes to get to the next level.”
Cannizzaro concluded a successful collegiate career at Carolina with the 2013 NCAA championship and was named the Most Outstanding Player of the 2013 NCAA Tournament. The two-time IWLCA All-America earned multiple awards following her career at UNC, including the Honda Award and the Patterson Medal, given to the top female student-athlete at North Carolina. Cannizzaro was also honored as a 2013 Tewaraaton finalist and ESPY nominee for best female college athlete.
The Cazenovia, N.Y., native had a stellar senior season as a Tar Heel. Cannizzaro holds the record for points in a season with 83 in 2013, and her 61 goals are the third-most in a season at North Carolina. The two-time All-ACC and ACC All-Tournament team member is fourth in career goals in Tar Heel history with 157.
The Athletic Director's Scholar-Athlete Award recipient also has national team experience as a member of the U.S. women's senior national team in 2012.
Cannizzaro is the sister of Sean and Connor Cannizzaro, members of the 2015 NCAA champion Denver men's lacrosse team.
