Primland Collegiate Invitational

Tar Heels Win At Primland, Jenkins Sets UNC Record
September 29, 2015 | Men's Golf
MEADOWS OF DAN, VA. – Junior Carter Jenkins set the all-time UNC 18-holes record with a second round 9-under par 63 and the University of North Carolina men's golf team shot 9-under 279 for the second consecutive round to win the weather-shortened Primland Collegiate Invitational on Tuesday.
The event was played at the Highland Course, a par-72, 7,053-yard layout.
The Tar Heels won by five strokes over Auburn and 11 strokes over host Wake Forest.
Jenkins, a Raleigh native, completed his second round this morning by birdieing the 18th hole, his ninth birdie of the round. His 9-under-par round breaks the UNC record of 8-under that was accomplished eight times, most recently by Jack Fields in 2009. Jenkins' 63 is the second in school history – Fields shot a 63 in the second round of the 2009 UNCG Bridgestone Collegiate in Greensboro.
Jenkins led the field with 15 birdies over the two rounds. He had no bogeys in the second round and just two in the tournament. He birdied 1, 3, 4, 6, 9, 10, 12, 16 and 18 in the second round, which began on Monday and finished this morning. The scheduled third round was cancelled due to rain.
Tar Heels played the par 3 holes in 9-under for the event, 14 shots better than runner-up Auburn.
The win is Carolina's first of the season and the seventh under fifth-year head coach Andrew Sapp. Last year, the Tar Heels won three times.
This is the 11th time in the last 30 years the Tar Heels won a 36-hole event. UNC's two-round total of 558 is seven strokes better than any previous two-round victory and the team's 18-under-par total is nine better to par than UNC's win at the John Ryan Memorial Tournament at the Duke Golf Course in Durham in 1985-86.
Jenkins finished second at 68-63–131, two shots behind Auburn's Michael Johnson, who shot 64-65 for a total of 129, 15 shots under par. The second-place finish is Jenkins' highest finish in nine career events as a Tar Heel.
Carolina placed two golfers in the top 10, four in the top 12 and all five in the top 20.
Freshman Joshua Martin tied for seventh at 2-under 142 for his first collegiate top-10 finish in just his second event. Sophomores Ben Griffin and William Register tied for 12th at even-par 144 and junior Henry Do tied for 19th at 1-over 145.
“This was a great team win led by some incredible golf by Carter,” says Sapp. “His 63 was amazing to watch. It is always great to have all five players finish in the top 20 and to not have to count a score over par. Hopefully we can take this momentum into the Tar Heel (Intercollegiate) and the rest of our fall tournaments."
The Tar Heels return to action this Saturday and Sunday, October 3-4, at the Tar Heel Intercollegiate at UNC Finley Golf Course. Two rounds of golf on Saturday are scheduled to begin with a 14-team, 11-individual shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.
