UNC 5th, Register 4th at Tavistock; Monta'o Wins at Elon
October 18, 2016 | Men's Golf
William Register shot a 1-under-par 71 and finished tied for fourth and the University of North Carolina men's golf team finished fifth ahead of two top-10 teams at the Tavistock Collegiate Invitational played at the Isleworth Golf and Country Club.
Florida won the team event at 20-under-par, 11 strokes ahead of Vanderbilt. The Tar Heels shot 8-over 296 on Tuesday and finished at 6-over 870 for the tournament.
Register had Carolina's low round on Tuesday and was the only Tar Heel under par over the final 18 holes. Austin Hitt and Zach Martin both shot 77 and tied for 23rd. Ben Griffin shot a 73 and tied for 32nd.
Florida's Alejandro Tosti won medalist honors at 8-under-par 208 despite shooting a 73 today. Tosti shot the low round of the tournament, a 65, in Monday's second round. He beat Vanderbilt's Patrick Martin and Matthias Schwab by one shot.
Register tied for fourth with North Florida's Dillon Woods and Andrew Alligood. Register's 210 total was the best by a Tar Heel in a 54-hole event this fall and his low score since he shot 6-under 210 last spring in the Puerto Rico Classic.
“It was a wonderful finish for William (Register),” says UNC head coach Andrew Sapp. “It was awesome to see him play well against an elite field on a great course. As a team, the back nine is going to sting for a while. Five double bogeys on the back is not the way you move up the leaderboard. However, we were able to get some quality wins against strong competition. Now we need to improve over the break and get ready for the spring season.”
Tavistock was Carolina's final team event of the fall. The team begins play in the spring at the Sea Best Invitational in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., on February 6th.
Also on Tuesday, UNC junior Jose Montaño shared medalist honors at the Elon Phoenix Invitational played at Alamance Country Club. Playing as an individual entry, Montaño followed Monday rounds of 67 and 65 with an even-par 71 on Tuesday to finish 10-under 203. His 210 total and 10-under finish are the best by a Tar Heel this fall. The win is Montaño's third collegiate victory. He won two events at Xavier before he transferred to UNC.
George Mason's Eric Edwards and Elon's Jake Leavitt also finished at -10 to earn a share of the individual title.
UNC sophomore Tailing Song tied for 15th at 3-under 210.
