Kea Leads Carolina To Season Opening Victory
November 11, 2016 | Women's Basketball
Kea, in her official debut with the Tar Heels, set a career high in points, topping her 18 scored at Tennessee on March 1, 2015 when she was a freshman at Vanderbilt.
Stephanie Watts knocked down four three-pointers on her way to 13 points, and a team-leading eight rebounds and five assists. Freshman Emily Sullivan contributed 12 points and six boards off the bench.
Kea scored nine points in the first quarter to help propel her club to a 20-15 lead after one period of play.
Sullivan also made her presence felt in the first half with seven points off the bench in her first collegiate game. The Tar Heels held the Lady Hornets scoreless the final six minutes, 28 seconds of the second quarter, and scored the final 11 points to lead 36-22 at intermission.
Midway through the third quarter, Carolina pieced together a 14-2 run over a stretch of 3:44 to push the lead up to 50-29, forcing Alabama State to call a timeout with just over four minutes left in the stanza. Kea fueled the run with nine points.
The Tar Heels promptly turned the game into a rout by scoring the first 11 points of the fourth quarter, extending the lead to as many as 32 points in the final minutes.
Britney Wright, the preseason Player of the Year in the Southwestern Athletic Conference, scored 24 points for Alabama State.
North Carolina is back in action next Thursday hosting Alabama A&M at 6 p.m.
