Carolina Beats Virginia, 11-10, In 2OT

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA.—Sydney Holman took a pass from Aly Messinger and scored with two seconds remaining in the second overtime period to give fourth-ranked North Carolina (5-2, 1-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) an 11-10 win over seventh-ranked Virginia on Saturday afternoon at Klockner Stadium.
The Tar Heels improve to 5-2 overall in 2016, 1-0 in ACC play. Virginia falls to 4-4, 0-2.
Carolina led, 10-6, with 13:02 left in the second half after Molly Hendrick scored her fourth goal of the game off an assist from Sammy Jo Tracy. The Cavaliers closed the second half on a 4-0 run to force overtime. Kasey Behr scored on a free position attempt with no time remaining on the clock in the second half to force the extra periods.
Neither team scored in overtime until Holman's goal with two seconds remaining.
"This was an exciting win for us," Tar Heel head coach Jenny Levy said afterward. "We faced many challenges during this game, and I was extremely proud that our team was able to stay focused and come out with the win. As always, we walk away with things to work on, but to get a win to start our ACC season is great. Our group is hungry and focused on continuing to learn from each game we play so we can continue to grow and improve."
Hendrick led Carolina with four goals, while Messinger had two goals and three assists. Holman scored twice and Tracy had a goal and an assist. Marie McCool and Kelly Devlin scored as well, and Olivia Ferrucci added two assists.
Kasey Behr led Virginia with three goals, while Kelly Reese and Posey Valis added two apiece. Maggie Jackson had a goal and an assist, and Besser Dyson and Angie Loynax both scored once.
Caylee Waters started and played all 72 minutes in goal for the Tar Heels, improving to 5-1 this season with the victory while making eight saves. Rachel Vander Kolk made seven saves in a losing effort for the Cavaliers, falling to 4-4 this season.
