Dai Gives Carolina Another Perfect ACC Regular Season
April 17, 2016 | Women's Tennis
North Carolina (26-2, 14-0) will be the top seed in next week's ACC Championships at the Cary Tennis Center in Cary, North Carolina. The Tar Heels' receive a double bye and will play in the quarterfinals on Friday against Wake Forest or Virginia Tech at 10 a.m.
Carolina is the top seed in the event for the fourth-straight season.
On Sunday, UNC lost the doubles point for only the second time all season, but was able to overcome that setback by dominating singles play with wins on four of the six courts.
Senior Ashley Dai made it a successful comeback with a three-set win over Alexa Anton-Ohlmeyer on court six. Dai lost the first set 6-4, before winning 6-3 and 6-2 in sets two and three, respectively.
The victory extends Carolina's winning streak to 28 in a row against ACC competition in the regular season. In addition, seniors Dai, Whitney Kay and Kate Vialle recorded an incredible 50-3 mark against the league over the last four seasons.
Georgia Tech (16-7, 11-3) extended its lead to 2-0 with a win by Kendal Woodard on court four over UNC”s freshman Chloe Ouellet-Pizer, however, the rally began with sophomore Marika Akkerman's win over Alexis Prokopuik on court five.
No. 1 Hayley Carter tied the match at 2-2 with a gritty 6-2, 7-6 (1) win over No. 34 Johnnise Renaud on court one. UNC's other rookie, Jessie Aney, rallied from down a set to put UNC in the lead at 3-2, before Tech's 49th-ranked Paige Hourigan topped No. 39 Whitney Kay in three sets on court two, meaning the match would be decided on court six between Dai and Anto-Ohlmeyer.
Limited to playing primarily doubles in her senior campaign, Dai has played some of her best tennis over the last two weekends. The Temple City, California, native is a perfect 3-0 in singles dating back to last Sunday's Senior Day win over Boston College.
