Tar Heels Earn At-Large NCAA Bid

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The University of North Carolina men's lacrosse team has earned an at-large bid to the 2016 NCAA Division I Tournament and will travel to Milwaukee, Wis., Saturday to play Big East Conference Tournament champion Marquette at 2:30 p.m. The game will be played at Valley Fields in Milwaukee.
The bid marks the 31st time the Tar Heels have made the NCAA Tournament field since earning their first bid in 1977. Carolina is 29-26 all-time in tournament play. Carolina is unseeded for only the fourth time in school history and will be on the road in the NCAA first round for the third time since the field expanded in 1995.
The Golden Eagles are the No. 6 seed in the tournament field after winning the Big East Conference automatic bid with a 10-9 victory over defending NCAA champion Denver Saturday. Marquette is in its fourth year as a varsity program and features a roster with 19 seniors.
North Carolina enters the tournament with an 8-6 overall record while the Golden Eagles are 11-4. Saturday will mark the first meeting between the two teams. The winner of Saturday's first round game will advance to the NCAA quarterfinals in Columbus, Ohio the following Sunday, May 22 to meet the winner of a first round game between Notre Dame and Air Force.
Saturday's game will be televised nationally on ESPNU.
