Tar Heels Finish Fourth at Olympia Fields
September 18, 2016 | Men's Golf
University of North Carolina junior William Register (Burlington) shot his second consecutive even-par 70 to lead the Tar Heels past four top-20 teams to a fourth-place finish in the Olympia Fields/Fighting Illini Invitational Sunday at the Olympia Fields Country Club North Course.
Carolina shot 7-over-287 on Sunday, but held off Florida State (ranked #18), UNLV (#25), Arizona State (#12), Texas (#1) and USC (#8) for fourth place. The Tar Heels shot 294-285-287 for a three-day total of 866, 26-over.
Host school Illinois, the second-ranked team in the nation by Golfweek, won the event at 5-over 845. Fourth-ranked Oklahoma State was second at 858, Texas A&M was third at 864 and the Tar Heels were fourth at 866. Florida State rounded out the top five a shot behind UNC.
“I am proud of the way the guys fought this week,” says Carolina head coach Andrew Sapp. “We got off to a rough start the first day, but battled on that back nine and continued to battle that way the rest of the tournament. We would have liked to make more of a push toward second and third today, but we earned quality wins against some strong teams. This is a golf course where course knowledge is key and, being one of the few new teams in this field, I was pleased with how our guys adjusted each round and played smart golf.”
Sophomore Joshua Martin (Pinehurst) led the Tar Heels with an 10th-place finish at 2-over 212. Register was even par over the last two days and finished tied for 17th at 5-over 215. Freshman Austin Hitt (Longwood, Fla.) was 22nd at 218. Junior Ben Griffin (Chapel Hill) and senior Henry Do (Canton, Mich.) posted 71 and 73, respectively, on Sunday for their best rounds of the tournament.
Texas A&M's Cameron Champ shot 69 on Sunday to take medalist honors at 5-under 205. His 65 in the opening round matched the best round of the tournament.
Carolina returns to action on September 26th at the Primland Collegiate Invitational hosted by Wake Forest in Meadows of Dan, Va. UNC is the defending champion at Primland.
