Hampton Trips Up Carolina In Season Opener

CHAPEL HILL - North Carolina was tripped up in its season opener, 70-66, to Hampton on Friday afternoon inside Carmichael Arena.
Paris Kea led North Carolina (0-1) with 24 points, six assists and six steals. Freshman Jocelyn Jones added 14 points off the bench, classmate Janelle Bailey had 12 points and Jamie Cherry kicked off her senior campaign with 10 points.
Monnazjea Finney-Smith scored a game-high 25 points behind a 7-of-12 effort from three-point range to lead Hampton (1-0), who has now defeated 11 teams in the six "power conferences" over the last nine seasons under the direction of head coach David Six.
Jephany Brown scored 16 points, Alina Starr had 11 and DeJane James tossed in 10 for the Lady Pirates.
Just when it appeared UNC was about to pull away having carved out a 59-52 lead, its largest of the game, with six minutes, 29 seconds left in the fourth quarter, Hampton drained three of its 11 three-pointers in a span of 72 seconds to regain a 61-59 edge.
Jones put Carolina back in front, 65-63, but the Lady Pirates showed tremendous poise down the stretch in outscoring the Tar Heels by a 7-1 margin to close out the win.
The first half belonged to the Lady Pirates, who shot 54.8 percent from the floor, led by as many as 10 points, and held a 39-34 margin at intermission.
Kea led all scorers with 11 points, but 14 Tar Heel miscues turned into 14 points for the visitors.
North Carolina hosts Colorado on Sunday at 2 p.m.The game marks the first Kids Day promotion of the season. The first 150 kids through the door will eat free and face painting is available for all kids in attendance.
In addition, 10 UNC students will be picked at random to take a half court shot at halftime for $1000. Tickets will be given out at the student entrance will be selected during the first quarter break.
