Tar Heels Down High Point, 16-6

CHAPEL HILL—Ela Hazar had two goals and four assists and Molly Hendrick had four goals and one assist as the top-ranked University of North Carolina women's lacrosse team defeated High Point, 16-6, on Friday evening at Fetzer Field. Hazar tied her career high with six points for the second game in a row after also tallying two goals and four assists in last weekend's win at No. 3 Florida.
Marie McCool added three goals and an assist for the Tar Heels, who also got three goals and 11 draw controls from Sammy Jo Tracy and two goals and an assist from Sydney Holman. Freshman Katie Hoeg scored her first career goal and added two assists, while classmate Riley Harrison also scored her first career goal. Carly Reed added an assist for UNC.
Erica Perrotta and Samantha Brown both scored twice for High Point. Darla Poulin and Maggie Williams also added goals for the Panthers.
The victory improved Carolina to 3-0 this season and is the Tar Heels' 20th consecutive win. The Panthers, playing their 2017 opener, fell to 0-1. It was win No. 298 in the career of UNC head coach Jenny Levy, third-most in NCAA history.
Caylee Waters went the distance in goal for Carolina and made six saves to improve to 3-0 this season and 35-6 in her career. HPU's Molly Andrews made 10 saves while allowing 16 goals in taking the loss to fall to 0-1.
The Tar Heels led, 9-3, at halftime, behind two goals and three assists from Hazar and three goals by Tracy.
High Point scored three of the first four goals of the second half to make it 10-6 with 17:56 to play in the game, but the Tar Heels ripped off six goals in a row to end the game and make it a 10-goal margin.
Carolina will play an exhibition on Saturday morning against the England National Team and return to regular season play next Saturday (Feb. 25) at No. 2 Maryland in a rematch of the last two NCAA championship games.
