Tar Heels Fourth as 2nd Round Suspended Due to Darkness
Tar Heel men's golfers Ryan Gerard and Austin Hitt are both 2 under par through 15 holes in the second round as play was suspended due to darkness at the Royal Oaks Intercollegiate Monday at the Maridoe Golf Club.
The Tar Heels are in fourth place at 12 over par. Defending NCAA champion Oklahoma State is the only team in the field under par at 12 under. Arkansas is 4 over, NC State is 6 over and the Tar Heels are six shots behind the Pack.
Carolina and NC State are both 1 under par for the second round, joining Oklahoma State (-7) as the only teams in the field below par in the second round.
UNC was 19 shots over par through its first 15 holes in Monday's morning round, but rallied to drop seven strokes to par over its next 18 holes.
Carolina shot a 13-over-par 293 in the morning round, which put the Tar Heels in sixth place heading into the afternoon round.
"We're proud of the guys for the way they hung in there today," says UNC head coach Andrew DiBitetto. "It's an extremely difficult golf course and conditions were even tougher this morning with cooler temperatures and some wind. Everyone except Oklahoma State struggled early, but our guys did what we always talk about, which is to be resilient. They stayed disciplined and committed."
Hitt shot 77 in the first round, but is 2 under through 15 holes in the second. Gerard double-bogeyed his first two holes and was 6 over through five holes, but had four birdies and a bogey over his final 13 holes to finish the first round with a 3-over 73.
Thus far in the second round, Gerard has four birdies and two bogeys, and Hitt has three birdies and only one bogey. Gerard is tied for seventh place at 1 over.
Ryan Burnett led Carolina with an even par 70 in round one, and is tied for ninth in the individual standings at plus 2.
Senior Joshua Martin is in 23rd place after shooting 73 in the first round and is 1 over in the second.
Second-round action resumes Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. Eastern. The third and final round will follow the completion of the second round.
