Royal Oaks Intercollegiate Day Two
Hitt Leads with 70, UNC Sixth at Royal Oaks
October 23, 2018 | Men's Golf
Fall Season Ends in Texas
University of North Carolina junior Austin Hitt led the Tar Heels with an even-par 70 in the third and final round of the Royal Oaks Intercollegiate, hosted by Baylor at the Maridoe Golf Club.
Carolina shot 20 over par for the round and finished sixth in the 14-team field. Defending NCAA champion Oklahoma State won the event by 32 strokes over runner-up NC State. The Cowboys shot 275-271-281–827 and were the only team to finish below par at 13 under. The Wolfpack was second at 19 over par, SMU was third (+23), Arkansas was fourth (+27), Pepperine finished fifth at (+33) and the Tar Heels (+35) edged Baylor (+36) for sixth.
Pepperdine's Clay Feagler and Oklahoma State's Viktor Hovland and Matthew Wolff tied for medalist honors at 4 under. Feagler shot 66, the lowest score in the final round; Hovland, the 2018 U.S. Amateur champion, was the only player in the field to shoot in the 60s all three rounds (69-68-69).
Hitt shot Carolina's best score in the final round and finished tied for 21st at 9 over 219. Freshman Ryan Burnett shot even par in each of the first two rounds, posted a 77 in the third round and tied for 14th. Senior Joshua Martin also tied for 14th by shooting 73-71-73–217.
The first round and the first 15 holes of the second round were contested Monday, before play was suspended due to darkness. UNC finished its second round this morning and ended the round with a 2-over-par 282. Sophomore Ryan Gerard shot a 69, the low round by a Tar Heel in the tournament.
"We played an extremely demanding golf course in difficult conditions," says UNC head coach Andrew DiBitetto. "We did some good things and our players fought for 54 holes. Playing in these conditions exposes anything a player might need to improve upon, which is perfect heading into our short off-season. We'll come up with plans for how each player can improve and how we can improve as a team. Tournament competition is always the most fun for players, but getting better in the off season is a close second."
The Royal Oaks Intercollegiate was Carolina's fourth and final tournament of the fall semester.
