UNC Hosts Michigan Sunday With Final Four Trip On The Line
November 10, 2018 | Field Hockey
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – A special home season for the UNC field hockey team will wrap up on Sunday as the Tar Heels host Michigan at Karen Shelton Stadium for an NCAA Tournament second-round matchup. Start time is 1 p.m. and the winner earns at least one more game, moving on to Louisville, Ky., for the NCAA semifinals next Friday. Win or lose, though, this team of Tar Heels won't play again in Chapel Hill.
This year's team is 20-0, with 11 of those wins coming at home. The 11th was earned on Friday, when UNC beat William & Mary 4-0 to advance to the NCAA second round. No. 8 Michigan beat No. 10 Saint Joseph's 3-2 in the second of two first-round games played on a rainy afternoon in Chapel Hill.
Admission to Shelton Stadium for Sunday's NCAA Tournament matchup is $5 for adults and $3 for students/children. UNC students get in free with a One Card, and the weather promises to be sunnier.
Six seniors – Leila Evans, Malin Evert, Morgan Goetz, Mary Kathryn Harrah, Ashley Hoffman and Eva van't Hoog – will be making their final appearances in Chapel Hill.
The Tar Heels are the No. 1 overall seed in the tournament for the first time since 2014 and are making their NCAA-record 35th appearance in the field. This year marks the 20th time that UNC has hosted NCAA Tournament games, but the first time in brand-new Shelton Stadium.
Michigan also is the team against which UNC opened the home season. The Tar Heels hosted the Wolverines on Aug. 25 as the first-ever game at new Shelton Stadium as part of the ACC-Big Ten Challenge. UNC won 5-1.
Carolina leads the series with Michigan 23-5. The teams are meeting in NCAA Tournament play for the fifth time, with each team having won two of the previous meetings. The Wolverines won a pair of first-round matchups in Michigan, in 2001 in Ann Arbor and in 2003 in East Lansing. UNC has won the last two, both second-round meetings and both in Chapel Hill. In 2011, Carolina won 5-1 to advance to the final four. And in 2015, the last time the Tar Heels hosted NCAA play, Carolina held on for a 1-0 win over the Wolverines to advance.
UNC moved into its new facility at the start of preseason in August and dedicated it as Karen Shelton Stadium in October. Last weekend Carolina hosted the Atlantic Coast Conference Championship and home team prevailed, winning the 21st title in program history.
Now the Tar Heels are playing to earn their 10th-consecutive final four trip and one more home-turf celebration this fall.
