Carolina Faces Road Test At Ohio State In ACC/Big Ten Challenge

Carolina is on the road to take on Ohio State in the annual ACC/Big Ten Challenge Thursday at 7 p.m. UNC owns an impressive 8-3 record in the yearly challenge and have won the its last two meetings in the series with the Big Ten, an 88-83 home victory over Minnesota last year and a 72-59 road win at Wisconsin in November 2016.
Carolina is 2-0 against the Buckeyes in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, winning 72-63 in Columbus in 2008 and in Chapel Hill, 57-54, in 2012.Â

Ohio State: Carolina leads 5-2. The Tar Heels have won five successive games in the series after dropping the first three to the Buckeyes back in the 1970s. The most recent matchup occured in the 2015 NCAA Tournament in Chapel Hill when Jamie Cherry's jumper with 0.6 seconds left sent Carolina past Ohio State 86-84 and into the Sweet 16.Â

Rhyne Howard scored 25 points to lead Kentucky to an 85-75 win over North Carolina last Saturday in the Island Division championship game of the Paradise Jam. Stephanie Watts led all scorers with 27 points for North Carolina (5-2). The junior guard averaged 21.7 points and shot 54.2 percent (13-of-24) from three-point land over three games in St. Thomas. On Saturday, Watts was 7-of-13 from downtown. Shayla Bennett and Paris Kea each had 13 points and Janelle Bailey offered up 12 points. Howard was named MVP of the Paradise Jam Island Division for Kentucky (7-0). Taylor Murray scored 23 points and Maci Morris had 18.

• Stephanie Watts was named to the Paradise Jam All-Tournament Team after averaging a team-leading 21.7 points over three games in the U.S. Virgin Islands last week. Watts scored a season-high 27 points against Kentucky and had 24 vs. #17 USF.
• UNC is receiving votes in the latest AP Top 25 poll, garnering five votes this week.Â
• Coach Hatchell is two wins shy of setting the record for most wins at an ACC school (Currently held by Debbie Ryan, Virginia, 739).
• Janelle Bailey leads all ACC sophomores with 16 career double-doubles, the third most among all active players in the league.
• Redshirt Junior Stephanie Watts also has 16 career double-doubles.
• Watts' seven three-pointers vs. Kentucky is tied for the third most in a  single game at UNC. She holds the school and ACC record of 10 made against Charleston Southern (11/22/16).
• UNC is third in the ACC shooting 75.6 percent from the free throw line. The Tar Heels set a program record last season converting at 74.3%
