November 29, 2018 | Women's Basketball
COLUMBUS, Ohio - Carmen Grande scored 23 points to lead Ohio State to a 76-69 victory over North Carolina on Thursday in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge from Value City Arena.
North Carolina (5-3) saw all five of its starters score in double figures for the second time this season. Stephanie Watts had 15 points, followed by Paris Kea and Taylor Koenen with 14 points apiece, while Janelle Bailey added 11 points and nine rebounds and Shayla Bennett had 10.
Grande, a graduate transfer from Ball State, was two points off her career high to pace Ohio State (2-2). Dorka Juhász had 18 points and Carly Santoro added 11.
Despite the loss, UNC owns an impressive 8-4 record in the annual challenge with the Big Ten. Its the first loss in three meetings with Ohio State within the challenge, and snaps a five-game winning streak over the Bucks.
Carolina scored the first seven points of the game and led 12-2 by the time Ohio State called a timeout just two minutes, 49 seconds into the first quarter. The lead grew to 16-2 before the Buckeyes finally made their first basket midway through the period.
Watts picked up two early fouls and that thwarted UNC's early momentum. OSU responded with a 14-2 run to get back in the game.
Tied 21-21 in the opening minute of the second quarter, Bennett put Carolina back ahead, 27-25, with a drive to the hoop out of the second quarter timeout. UNC led 33-29 at the half.
OSU took its first lead of the game on a stick back from Santoro in the opening moments of the third quarter, but a runner from Watts later in the stanza had the Heels back up five, 44-39.
Janai Crooms' three-pointer put the Buckeyes ahead for good late in the third period. The Tar Heels got within 72-69 on a Kea triple with 28 seconds remaining in regulation, but four free throws sealed the win for Ohio State, who played its first game in over two and a half weeks after having two games cancelled in mid November due to the fires in California.
Ohio State dominated the glass to the tune of a 51-28 advantage over the Tar Heels. 44 points in the paint and 15 second-chance points keyed the comeback win for the Buckeyes.
Carolina returns home for its next three games, beginning with Maine on Sunday at 2 p.m.
